Windows 8

After installing a few systems and helping a few clients with Windows 8 it is time for me to say that it seems pretty good. I know, we’re slow to respond here… but seriously, it’s no fun upgrading and finding out there are bugs or conflicts that cause too many headaches!

The caveat is always there that one must check software versions you are using / want and ensure things are compatible. For instance there are issues with older Office / Outlook version and newer Exchange and so on but over all it seems pretty good.

If you are thinking about Windows 8 let us know and we can go through a checklist and ensure it will work for what you are wanting to do!

One of our first projects… Ghosts

Many years ago, when first embarking into the world of “web stuff” and known as ‘Digital Group’, I was contacted by my good friend Bruce Coughlan. Bruce and I had played music together for some time and I knew very well his creativity, passion and drive. When we were touring we would often talk music and occasionally he would be writing a song and I would get involved. He is a fabulous songwriter and today has developed his own voice and that of his band Tillers Folly, who are tearing it up songwriting in Nashville, charting in the Folk / Roots categories and inspiring live audiences at venues in Canada, Europe & US.

Anyhow, that phone call from Bruce came to me around 2000 or so (it was a long while ago anyhow) and he said, “I have an idea for a website”. Using featured songs from his CD “Ghosts of the Mighty Fraser” and crafting the lyrics in to history lessons we created an interactive site “Ghosts of the North West Coast”. Long story short is we got a grant to produce this site using my company, hiring young coders and the outcome, in it’s final state from years ago, is below. It was hosted for a few years as part of the now defunct ‘Canada’s Digital Collections”. Note that, waaayyy back then, the screens were much smaller. Hence the site is design for 800×600 layout so it is quite small to view on most of today’s systems.
I thought I would keep it alive as a memory of our early years…

What you see day to day…

A friend posted a note on Facebook about the effects of nature, and just being able to see nature,  on the human being. It stated, correctly, that productivity increases in people who can see nature from their workplace.

Since we do so much of our work at the computer, from our home offices, it was a major item on the ‘must have’ list for our new home that there be a decent space around us and some silence. That’s why I am grateful for our view from our new office…not to mention a myriad of birds chirping!

The view from our new office... a real blessing!

Caps Lock Keys….

Why do they exist? Because they were needed in the days of mainframes and green screens. Not anymore! The solution is obvious!

i hate caps lock keys because they are useless

What kind of Website???

This is a repost of some questions we posted a while ago.

What kind of website will I get?
A Content Management System (CMS) is one which allows the owner to make the changes themselves. All the pages, news items, pictures and information can be edited, added or deleted as needed using a web based administration area. Once the design and structure is agreed upon the site framework is made and then it is ready to go!

How Hard is it to work with?
There are many CMS systems and the administration area of some are very user friendly. We will show you the 3 main systems we use – any one of which is suitable for a general website but has particular benefits depending on your needs – and we can Continue reading

Compact PC’s

A few clients have recently taken newer small sized computers; compact computers that are suited for space saving situations or for areas where the computer is not easily stored. These units are in what are called “small-form-factor” (SFF) cases.

These units are usually not workhorses for crunching data but for simple web browsing and running an application such as a Point Of Sale they work great. Once they are up and running they have enough CPU power to manage most basic office and store tasks.

Worth looking into in some cases!

Windows Vista, Windows XP… Windows 7 ??

What operating system should I have installed on my system?

So many people have asked us this question!

The response usually starts with a few questions back to them such as, “What are you doing with your computer?” and “How familiar are you with the system you have now?”

Windows Vista has been out for a while and has suffered from a number of things that make it not friendly especially in business environments. Many, many times we have had to ‘back pedal’  and install XP Pro in business situations.

Home users are usually okay with Vista depending on their applications and the hardware they are using. A lot of these installations need Continue reading
